I was looking at L. and A. chatting. Both 59, the two women were born in the little town on the hill. Both were born in the 50’ when things started changing also in Southern Italy. A. and L. were able to study. L. went to college, A. graduated; the next step was to find a job. A. and her husband got good jobs in the big city.

 

L. was back to her native town and the little house where she was born. She never married and is living with her parents since. Her dad didn’t like the idea of L. leaving their little town so she never did. “Well, if you know that your parents are unhappy; also you are, aren’t you?” – She told me. Her story isn’t uncommon in Basilicata.

A friend told me the story of his aunt - she was about 50 and still single, living with her elderly mother. One day she said: “Mum, I can’t take it anymore. I will find you a career and I’m leaving, mum.” Her mother agreed – she’s 90 now and is doing well. Fit enough to cook, she’s often preparing the meals also for her career. It’s sort of happy end?

Patrzyłam na rozmawiające L. i A. Obie 59. latki urodziły się w miasteczku na wzgórzu. W latach 50. życie ulegało zmianie również na południu Włoch. A. i L. mogły się uczyć; L. ukończyła szkołę średnią, A. licencjat, następnym krokiem było znalezienie pracy. A. i jej mąż znaleźli dobrą pracę w dużym mieście.

L. wróciła do rodzinnego miasteczka i małego domku, gdzie się urodziła. Nie wyszła za mąż i nadal tam mieszka. Jej tato nie chciał, by wyjechała z ich miasteczka, więc pozostała w domu. "Jeżeli wiesz, że twoi rodzice nie są szczęśliwi, ty też nie jesteś, prawda?" - powiedziała mi. Jej historia nie jest odosobniona w Basilicacie.

Przyjaciółka opowiedziała mi historię ciotki: miała około 50. lat i mieszkała z wiekową matką. Pewnego dnia powiedziała: "Mamo, dłużej tak nie mogę. Znajdę ci opiekunkę i wyjeżdżam." Matka zgodziła się na to - obecnie ma 90 lat i dobrze się miewa. Zdrowa i sprawna, gotuje dla swojej opiekunki. Coś w rodzaju happy endu.
